Niles Barton promotes Owen J. Curley to partner

Owen J. Curley has been elected to the partnership of Niles, Barton & Wilmer, LLP. His litigation practice focuses on commercial, real estate, construction, maritime, property insurance, related first party insurance matters, tort defense and complex civil litigation. Mr. Curley is licensed to practice law in Maryland, North Carolina and the District of Columbia. He has been an attorney with Niles Barton for eight years and serves on the firm's Technology and Hiring Committees. Mr. Curley has also attained the rank of Captain in the United States Navy Reserves.

Christopher J. Heffernan appointed to Chair of the Maryland State Bar Association Litigation Section

Christopher J. Heffernan has been elected Chair of the Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA) Litigation Section Council 2008-2009. The Litigation Section is the single largest section of the MSBA with over 1,850 members. Mr. Heffernan has served on the Litigation Section Council since 2000 and is also involved in the MSBA Section of Alternative Dispute Resolution. Mr. Heffernan's practice focuses on civil litigation, including business, construction, real estate, insurance and alternative dispute resolution. He is a partner at Niles Barton and is licensed to practice law in Maryland and the District of Columbia.

George E. Reede, Jr. receives AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell

Niles Barton congratulates Mr. Reede on this great accomplishment. He has earned an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell, a peer review rating that indicates very high to preeminent legal ability and ethical standards.

Owen J. Curley Promoted from Commander to Captain

Niles Barton would like to congratulate Owen J. Curley, an Associate in the Litigation Department, who has recently been promoted from Commander to Captain in the United States Navy Reserves. Captain is the highest Officer rank before the Navy's Admiralty ranks. Mr. Curley concentrates in commercial litigation, real estate litigation, maritime law, property insurance law, related first party insurance matters and general business litigation.

Baltimore, Md. March 12, 2008 Tina Lewandowski, the Marketing Director of Niles, Barton & Wilmer, LLP, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Community Law in Action, more widely known as CLIA. Ms. Lewandowski will assist CLIA with its marketing and fundraising efforts to promote the organization and its programs. Read the press release.

Niles Barton would like to recognize Eddie L. Pounds, an associate in the Litigation Department, for being appointed Vice-Chair of the City of Bowie's Elections Task Force. Mr. Pounds was appointed by Mayor G. Frederick Robinson. The Elections Task Force will meet regularly and assume the task of examining current election laws and amending or deleting them, as needed.

Christopher J. Heffernan receives "Best Lawyers in America" Honors

Niles, Barton & Wilmer, LLP congratulates Christopher J. Heffernan, a partner in the litigation department who was recently selected by his peers for inclusion in the 25th anniversary edition of The Best Lawyers in America in the area of Construction Law, which is an annual legal rankings guide. Selection to Best Lawyers is based on a rigorous peer-review survey.

Niles Barton welcomes Eddie L. Pounds to the Litigation Department

Niles, Barton & Wilmer, LLP is pleased to welcome Eddie L. Pounds as an associate in the Litigation Department. Mr. Pounds was previously a Senior Legal Analyst for Travelers Companies, Inc. and also interned for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Baltimore, Maryland, during law school. Christopher D. Wolf expands his jurisdiction to Pennsylvania. Mr. Wolf is an attorney in the Litigation Department and is now licensed to practice in Maryland and Pennsylvania. Courtney M. Mattson and Garrett S. Shames recently passed the Maryland Bar. Ms. Mattson was a law clerk for the firm and now joins the Litigation team as an associate. Mr. Shames was also a law clerk for the firm and is now an associate with the Commercial Real Estate Department. We congratulate them on this great accomplishment.

We are pleased to announce that Heather B. Nelson has joined the firm as an Associate in the Litigation Department. Ms. Nelson was most recently an Assistant District Attorney for the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office and prior to that was an Intern for the New York County District Attorney's Office. She is a 2004 graduate of the Villanova University School of Law.

In Memory of Carlyle Barton, Jr.:
     We would like to remember and honor a great man, attorney, philanthropist and fisherman: Carlyle Barton, Jr. (1922-2007). Mr. Barton contributed to the firm's history and future as a former partner who took the time to mentor many of the firm's current leaders. He started his practice in maritime law and then became a general practitioner before focusing on estates and trusts. Mr. Barton was also the grandson of one of the firm's founding partners, Randolph Barton. He will be missed by all of us.

Susan B. Austin and Susan D, Baker have become partners of the firm. Prior to this, both attorneys were Of Counsel to the firm.

Ms. Austin practices in the areas of estate planning and estate and trust administration. She is admitted to the Maryland State Bar and the U.S. Tax Court. She is a member of the Baltimore Estate Planning Council and the Estates & Trusts Section for both the Maryland Bar Association and the ABA. Ms. Austin received her J.D. from the College of William and Mary’s Marshall-Wythe School of Law in Virginia.

Ms. Baker is in the Corporate/Commercial Department of the firm and her practice includes contracts, copyrights and trademarks, and business and health care law. She is admitted to the Maryland State Bar. Ms. Baker received her J.D. from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Matthew L. Kimball has been elected President of the Board of Directors for Preservation Maryland. Mr. Kimball has served on the Board and been a member of the organization since 2001. Preservation Maryland is dedicated to preserving Maryland’s historic buildings, neighborhoods, landscapes and archaeological sites through outreach, funding and advocacy. Mr. Kimball’s volunteer activities with Preservation Maryland are a natural fit with his law practice, which focuses on real estate related matters including environmental law.

Jeffrey A. Wothers has been appointed to the Pension and Insurance Committee of Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster. His concentration on insurance law and commercial litigation assists him in his volunteer work on the committee. Mr. Wothers is also a member of the American Bar Association's Property Insurance Law Committee.

Matthew L. Kimball has been appointed Co-Chair of the 2007 Advanced Real Property Institute. Sponsored by the Maryland Institute For Continuing Professional Education for Lawyers, the Advanced Real Property Institute is a day-long seminar usually held in the early fall, and is the premier educational program of the Maryland State Bar’s Real Property Section. The program is taught by a faculty consisting of many of the region’s pre-eminent real property lawyers. Mr. Kimball has lectured at the program in the past and has been a member of the organizing committee for a number of years. Serving with Mr. Kimball as Co-Chair is Cynthia Berman of the Baltimore firm of Kramon & Graham, P.A.
