June 19, 2018In Memoriam: John “Jack” G. Wharton (February 15, 1927 – June 18, 2018)
John “Jack” G. Wharton, 91, a Partner in the firm’s Commercial Real Estate Department, passed away on June 18, 2018. Mr. Wharton had marked his 65th anniversary with the firm earlier this month. Mr. Wharton’s practice was primarily focused on commercial real estate matters, and chaired the firm’s Commercial Real Estate Department for many years.
Mr. Wharton graduated from the Gilman School, earned a Bachelor’s degree from Princeton University in 1950 and received his law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1953. He joined Niles Barton & Wilmer, LLP (at the time Niles, Barton, Gans & Markell) on June 1, 1953, and spent the remainder of his long career with the firm. He has served on the board of directors of several companies, including International Limousine Service Inc. and as director of a national title insurance company. He also served on the Board of Governors of the Green Spring Valley Hunt Club, where he and his wife Sharon were active golfers.
Mr. Wharton acted as a moderator and discussion leader on commercial real estate seminars organized by the International Council of Shopping Centers for over 20 years. Mr. Wharton has spoken extensively before industry-sponsored seminars on real estate related topics, and is the author of various nationally published articles.
Firm Managing Partner Craig Roswell noted that Jack Wharton “served as a mentor for generations of lawyers at Niles, Barton, including me. He was an extremely talented real estate lawyer, who found creative ways to solve problems and get to successful closings. He had a way of making his clients believe that their issues were the most important thing in the world, and they were to him. He developed close personal relationships with many of his clients, who found his relentless devotion and skill mixed with his charm and good humor to be irresistible. We join his family in missing Jack, but we celebrate all that he gave to this firm over his long career.”
The Daily Record covered Mr. Wharton’s diamond anniversary with the firm in an article titled “Lawyer's Diamond Anniversary” published on July 1, 2013.
Mr. Wharton was an integral part of the Niles Barton family for over 65 years, and we will miss his leadership, charm and energy enormously.see all news »
