Susan D. Baker was selected as a Local Hero through the Bank of America Neighborhood Excellence Initiative. As a Local Hero winner, Ms. Baker was able to designate the nonprofit, My Sister’s Circle, as a $5,000 grant recipient from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, Inc.
The Bank of America Neighborhood Excellence Initiative is designed to recognize, nurture and reward organizations, local heroes and student leaders who are helping their neighborhoods achieve excellence. Ms. Baker was selected as a 2009 Local Hero.
My Sister’s Circle is a comprehensive relationship-based program designed to mentor girls from disadvantaged Baltimore neighborhoods during their challenging transition to middle school, throughout high school, and into college. Mentors help their mentees prepare for the future, both academically and otherwise. My Sister’s Circle provides tutoring; organizes cultural, educational and recreational events; solicits summer camp scholarships; offers testing and counseling to guide girls and their families through the challenging middle and high school application process; and connects students with college preparation and placement programs.
