Congratulations Jeffrey Wothers named to the The Daily Record’s 2025 Business Law Power List

Congratulations to Niles, Barton & Wilmer, LLP Partner Jeffrey Wothers for being named to the The Daily Record’s 2025 Business Law Power List. Jeff is honored to be included in this list of the most influential and respected practitioners in the business law sector in Maryland.

Jeffrey A. Wothers brings three decades of experience in insurance litigation to his role as partner at Niles, Barton & Wilmer LLP. Wothers focuses his practice on Representations & Warranty and Warranty & Indemnity claims, insurance litigation and commercial litigation defense.

Recognized by Martindale-Hubbell with its highest AV-Preeminent distinction in insurance law, Wothers litigates coverage disputes and conducts arson and fraud investigations across North America. His clients include numerous Lloyd’s syndicates that underwrite insurance and reinsurance coverage for companies worldwide.

What’s the most important thing you do in your job?

Client service is our number one priority at Niles, Barton & Wilmer, LLP and the reason we exist.  We treat our clients as we would want to be treated in the same circumstances:  have trusted counsel who understands the client, their business/industry and circumstances of the problem or dispute.  Every day we collaborate with clients to problem-solve, exercising judgment and applying lessons learned from 32 years of law practice and other leadership roles in various organizations and industries.

What is one aspect of your profession you would like to change?

Gratuitous aggressiveness:  I am a strong proponent of mediation, and I often like to think creatively to resolve matters. I dislike the gratuitous aggressiveness that often exists in litigation.  It is unproductive, unnecessary and a barrier to successfully resolving problems, particularly complex problems.

If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?

In college, I drove a tractor trailer and would probably have done that if not for a law career.  There’s something appealing about being on the open road and exploring diverse and beautiful places. It gives you an appreciation and understanding of people and places.

It offers insights into the process and logistics behind everyday aspects of our life. Although truck driving and law are very different careers, my experience on the road provided an excellent foundation for my law career and life.
