Our Practices

Admiralty and Maritime

"Bringing calm to carriers on the seas and on land"

Niles Barton has been known for its expertise in admiralty and maritime law since 1923 when a partner, Judge Alfred Niles, along with Arnold W. Knauth, helped found the American Maritime Cases, the premier maritime case reporting service in the United States. Our maritime attorneys continue to be active in the maritime community and defend our clients’ maritime and inland marine claims throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Our law firm represents primarily vessel interests for numerous local, national and international clients such as marine lenders, insurers, underwriters, shipowners, marinas, tug companies, stevedores, terminal operators, builders, trucking companies, and transportation brokers. We advise clients on how to structure agreements and policies to limit future liabilities. When issues arise, our maritime attorneys conduct in-depth research and a defense strategy, knowing what to look for so our clients’ interests are protected. Therefore, clients feel more at ease when relying on our maritime knowledge and courtroom experience to resolve their case.
